CMR

CMR (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) is the agreement relating to the carriage contract in international road traffic. The Convention was concluded in 1956 and was amended in 1978. Nearly all European Countries are contracting countries of the Convention.

The purpose

The purpose is the standardisation of the conditions governing all the carriage contracts for reward in the cross-border carriage of goods by road.

The content

The Convention contains important regulations in respect of the contract for the international carriage of the goods by road, espeially also the carrier’s liability towards the principal. Additionally, the Convention contains specific provisions on the period of limitation for claims and actions. The provisions of the Convention predominantly constitute cogent law, which means that they cannot be contracted out.
